Ingredients

For the Hearts

  • 2 medium Beets Their vibrant color gives a striking wrap around the figs; colored bell peppers can serve as a fun substitute.
  • 4 Rice Paper Wrappers Help hold the beets and figs together while ensuring everything remains gluten-free; if unavailable, feel free to omit them.
  • 2 tablespoons Maple Syrup Provides a sweet glaze for marinating the hearts.
For the Toast
  • 1 cup Plant-based Cream Cheese A creamy spread to top your toast; feel free to use any variety of vegan cheese for this purpose.
  • 4 slices Toast (Gluten-free) Sets the stage for our whimsical hearts; choose your favorite gluten-free bread for the best base.

Equipment

  • Air Fryer
  • Knife
  • Skewers
  • mixing bowl

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Begin by preparing your fresh or dried black mission figs, pinching off the hard bottom to make a smooth surface.
  2. Take a few slices of vibrant beets and wrap them around each fig snugly.
  3. Moisten a rice paper wrapper until it's pliable but not mushy. Lay the beet-wrapped figs in the center of the wrapper, then fold and seal the edges.
  4. Thread a skewer through the center of each wrapped fig to secure it in place.
  5. Brush each encased fig heart generously with maple syrup.
  6. Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C). Place the skewered hearts in the fryer basket and air fry for 4-6 minutes.
  7. As the hearts air fry, toast your gluten-free bread until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Once cooked and slightly cooled, place the hearts atop the toasted bread generously spread with plant-based cream cheese.
  9. Drizzle a bit of beet syrup made from mixing leftover maple syrup with beet juice over the assembled Vampire Hearts on Toast.
